New Orleans Running Out of Options as It Scrambles for New Loans - New York Times

Absolutely Unbelievable

We had a National Catastrophe when hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the only thing these money grubbing idiots can think of is how much it will cost and how they are going to pay it back. Let me state that again, we had a National Catastrophe. One of America's cities was almost wiped off the map and the only thing they can think about is the cost? How stupid can they be? I personally find this attitude almost unbelievable. It is mind boggling to say the least.
What we should be doing is mobilizing our resources to rebuild this grand old city and help its residents rebuild their homes, not worry about the cost. This is a prime example of the incompetence of our current administration and its allies. Before Katrina hit we were warned repeatedly that the dikes could very likely fail. Did they do anything about it? Hell no. Some computer jockey at some bank probably decided that the cost was too high or that the risk wasn't high enough. Nothing was done and now you see the result. When the storm finally hit both state and government officials waited for the other to make the first step. One a bottom feeding lawyer heading FEMA was worried about the legal consequences if the government got involved too soon. The governor who had repeatedly asked for help fell on deaf ears. And it goes on and on ad-nauseum.
What we should do is take a lesson from the history books and look back during the second world war and copy what was done then to rebuild New Orleans. Kick the bankers out the door, close the books and get off our asses and get to work. If this is the only way we are looking at this tragedy we are in deep trouble. Damn the torpedoes and damn the cost. Lets get it done. That is what America is all about, helping each other. Aint that the truth?
